What does charging an electric car cost, and what does a home charger earn?

Calculate your charging costs with your own mileage, charging mix and rates, including the ERE payment for a home charger. Optionally compare just the energy or fuel costs with your current car.

1. Your electric car

Why do we ask where consumption was measured?

The car's computer usually shows the electricity used by the car. Some electricity is also lost while charging. Tick this if your kWh figure already measures electricity from the charger or meter, so we do not count charging losses twice.

2. Where do you charge?

Split your charging across locations. The percentages must add up to 100%.

Total: 100%

3. Your charging rates

These are editable example rates, not current market prices. Enter your own rates for a more personal estimate.

Compare energy contracts

You can enter your contract's home price per kWh. To compare suppliers and contracts, use the full energy calculator . This calculation does not import that comparison automatically yet.

4. Home charger and ERE payment

What is the ERE scheme?

Charging at home avoids CO₂ emissions. That earns emission reduction units (EREs), which fuel suppliers buy. With a charger that has a calibrated MID meter and is connected to the internet, a registering party sells them for you (often through the app of the charger or your energy supplier). You usually receive 7–15 cents per kWh charged at home; the price varies with the market. Without a charger with a MID meter you get nothing.

With a dynamic contract, a smart charger also charges in the cheapest hours; then enter the average price of those hours at 3.
