Does it pay to charge the electric car on solar power?
From 2027 it usually does, if the car is at home during the day. Solar power that goes into the car does not have to be fed back for a low tariff and bought back later at the full rate.
With net metering it makes little difference when you charge: you offset electricity fed back against what you take. Without net metering, a kWh of solar power in your own car is worth more than a kWh you feed back.
What it depends on
On how often the car is at home during the day, on how much surplus solar power there is, and on the charger: many chargers only charge above a minimum power, so a small surplus is not enough. With a dynamic contract you can also charge during cheap hours.
Together with a battery
A home battery and solar charging use the same surplus. If you have both, each yields less than on its own. The calculator calculates them together, so you can see that.
